SUMMARY:Virtual Programs 101: Behind the Scenes with STAR Net
DESCRIPTION:Watch Recorded Webinar\nView Presentation Slides\nDownload Link Bank\nView Chat Transcript\nVirtual Programs 101: Behind the Scenes with STAR Net\nAre you gearing up to conduct virtual programs at your library and looking for tips\, guidance\, strategies\, and resources? Join the STAR Library Network for a “behind the scenes” look into how we facilitate our own virtual programs – the STAR Net Webinar Series! While nothing can replace a face-to-face interaction\, virtual programs can open up new opportunities for learners that may not have access to the library’s in-person resources. They can also allow your library staff to still engage with regular patrons during the COVID-19 crisis. During this webinar\, we will have an open and honest conversation about how we consider audience needs for webinars and choose a platform that is right for them. We’ll also discuss managing inevitable technical problem and creating a warm\, welcoming environment where people feel comfortable learning. We’ll save plenty of time in this webinar to hear from YOU – we want to hear what helps you stay engaged while viewing a webinar and what strategies\, tips\, or resources have you found useful in conducting virtual programs at your library!

SUMMARY:STAR Net’s STEAM Equity Project Pre-Application Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Watch Recorded Webinar\nView Presentation Slides\nDownload Link Bank\nView Chat Transcript\nSTAR Net’s STEAM Equity Project Pre-Application Webinar\nThis free webinar is for library workers interested in bringing STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts and Math) programming to their libraries. Learn more about the STAR Library Network’s STEAM Equity Project\, a grant offering that will help public library workers in small and rural communities offer outstanding\, culturally responsive STEAM programming and exhibitions for their patrons\, especially often-underreached Latino populations. Twelve public libraries will receive $15\,000 over four years (winter 2020 – summer 2024) to participate in professional development activities\, support community partnerships and purchase STEAM learning materials. \nIn this session\, you will meet the STEAM Equity project partners\, learn about the project timeline and how to apply to become a participating library\, and learn about STEAM programming that you can bring to your library today. This project will have a unique two-step application process: we are asking interested libraries to submit a short Notice of Intent (NOI) now to determine eligibility and a full application later in the year. The deadline for submitting an NOI is July 20\, 2020. The STEAM Equity Project is offered by the ALA Public Programs Office and Office for Diversity\, Literacy and Outreach Services\, in collaboration with the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute (project lead)\, Twin Cities PBS (TPT) and their SciGirls program\, the Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI)\, and the Educational Development Center (EDC).

SUMMARY:Universal Design for Learning for Library Staff: Inquiry-Based\, Active\, Remote Learning Using UDL
DESCRIPTION:Watch Recorded Webinar (Day 1)\nWatch Recorded Webinar (Day 2)\nUniversal Design for Learning for Library Staff: Inquiry-Based\, Active\, Remote Learning Using UDL\nAs library staff look ahead to summer 2021\, they are beginning to consider how they will adapt summer reading plans to reach as many patrons as possible\, whether virtual or in-person. Library staff have found themselves in a sea of tools and resources to facilitate virtual programming during the COVID-19 crisis to simulate the in-person environment\, with each tool and resource producing a different result. \nOne methodology\, if implemented properly\, has the capacity to not only create inquiry-based\, active\, remote teaching and learning experiences\, but also impact the in-person format. This methodology is called the Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL focuses on providing patrons choice and agency while addressing their individual needs. This methodology supports self-regulation\, improves engagement\, and provides multiple means of expression. \nFacilitators from Infiniscope and the STAR Library Network are pleased to discuss UDL with library staff and find ways that library staff can implement this methodology in their own library or online

SUMMARY:The Perseverance Rover Landing
DESCRIPTION:Visit Our Event Campaign Page\n  \nThe Perseverance Rover Landing\nPerseverance will touch down on Mars on Thursday\, Feb. 18\, 2021\, at approximately 12:30 p.m. PST (3:30 p.m. EST). During landing\, the rover plunges through the thin Martian atmosphere\, with the heat shield first\, at a speed of over 12\,000 mph (about 20\,000 kph). A parachute and powered descent slow the rover down to about 2 mph (three-fourths of a meter per second). A large sky crane then lowers the rover on three bridle cords to land softly on six wheels. Landing on Mars is hard. Read all about the rover’s harrowing entry\, descent and landing. \nLanding at Jezero Crater\nThe rover’s new home is Jezero Crater\, a large impact crater about 28 miles wide (45 kilometers wide) just north of the Martian equator. Jezero once contained a lake\, which scientists think is one of the most ideal places to find evidence of ancient microbial life. If life exists anywhere else in our solar system\, chances are\, it might be at Jezero Crater. The main question Perseverance is trying to answer is: Was there ever ancient life on Mars? To answer that question\, the rover will collect and store the most compelling rock and soil samples for return to Earth by a future mission. Once on Earth\, scientists can use a variety of sophisticated instruments\, many of them too large and bulky to transport to Mars\, to help answer this question.
